The real reason:
LePage earlier backed legislation that would have allowed businesses to pay students $5.25 an hour, rather than the $7.50 minimum wage.

I thought the GOP Jobs bill was tax cuts for the rich? Or was that their health care bill. Or maybe it was their environmental bill….

Figures. It was either cutting wages for citizens already having trouble getting by, or abandoning and reversing their fanatical* anti-immigration rhetoric.
*- A redundant adjective when describing any wingnut belief or policy.

I hope it further speeds up the final step off the pier for this vile version of incompetence and bigotry.

Because unemployment in Maine is so low they need to press all hands into service?

To be fair, this isn’t substantially different from what we already have here in the Netherlands - and that is without that work permit! Hot damn, even this little welfare state (ish) would rebel against that…
And yes, we pay underage workers shockingly little, too. To be fair, they’re using it to supplement pocket money so it *works*, which I suppose will be a difference when comparing to a country where there’s a bit less of a social safety net.
Still though - not seeing the outrage…

Except the US doesn’t just have a “bit less” of a social safety net. We’ve got a lot less of that net, and that net is filled with holes much larger than a functioning net should have. Indeed, we have the most meager overall social welfare system in the developed world. So that’s the source of the outrage.
